What Is The Current Status Of LGBTQ Rights In Florida?

  • Florida Fails To Repeal Same-Sex Marriage Ban

Senator Tina Polsky and lesbian Rep. Michele Rayner introduced two bills to remove this marriage equality ban. The Florida legislature has once again failed to repeal the same-sex marriage ban. This is a clear signal that there are still many people who want discrimination and hatred in our society.

Executive Summary.

Florida's laws surrounding LGBTQ rights are a continuing source of contention. In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill - also known as the "Don't Say Gay" bill - which sharply restricts any mention of homosexuality or gender nonconformity in schools. This law has been strongly condemned by many civil rights groups, including the ACLU of Florida and the Human Rights Campaign.

Despite this setback, improvements have been made. 12 out of 67 counties now have ordinances protecting individuals from discrimination based on their gender identity when it comes to private employment, housing, and public services. Currently, there is no statewide law that would provide such protection throughout Florida.

Progress has indeed been made in improving LGBTQ rights in Florida. However, much more needs to be done before all members can truly feel safe and accepted within their communities.

What other steps should be taken to ensure that LGBTQ individuals have equal rights in the state?
