The star of the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, Uzo Aduba, just keeps coming up with new projects.

After the role of Shirley Chisholm, who was the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, in TV series Mrs. America, and which rewarded her with a third Emmy Award, Uzo Aduba will soon play in the HBO series In Treatment, Amazon Studios series Solos alongside Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren, and CBS show Low Country.

Now let’s talk about Low Country as the main character, who will be played by Aduba, is a lesbian deputy sheriff.

We don’t know all the details about this new drama series that has just been announced, but what I can tell you is that our lesbian and black deputy sheriff, Shirley Johnson, will be opposed to a white crime family that is causing trouble in a small town in South Carolina.

“Black and openly gay in a white southern stronghold, Shirley has been underestimated her whole life until now, when she takes on the wealthy white crime family that has kept everyone in the grip of fear,” the logline reads.

As for the series itself, know that Low Country was created by Robert and Michelle King, the creators of The Good Wife and Evil, among others.

As for the story, it was written by Dewayne Jones, who also took part in the writing of Evil and Your Honor.

Uzo Aduba was quick to share on Instagram her excitement to start this new project after being confirmed in the lead role:

“Thrilled and excited to bring new and meaningful stories to life, and add more seats at the table!”

We will soon be able to discover this new lesbian character on CBS, which has communicated no release date so far.
