Democratic and openly gay Senator J.D. Ford introduced a bill to ban “conversion therapies” to minors under the age of 18 in Indiana.
The City of Indianapolis was looking for a way to send a strong signal against “conversion therapies” at a time when the state is about to debate the bill.
Two years ago, legislators retooled a similar bill. So, to give Senator Ford’s proposed “conversion therapies” ban a fair chance, Indianapolis City Council passed a special resolution to support the bill.
Senator J.D. Ford
“If you’re doing one-on-one talk therapy and you know who you are, but you have someone who is telling you that that’s not who you are, you can imagine the non-congruence that someone may feel,” Ford said. “And so that non-congruence then leads to anxiety, depression and/or suicide. That’s why this bill is so important.”
The Indiana legislature is Republican-dominated, but last year Utah showed a Republican state can also oppose this barbaric practice of attempting to “change” a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
Besides Utah, 20 states and over 80 cities have already banned “conversion therapies” across the United States.
