“House Of The Dragon” Renewed For A Second Season!

House of The Dragon season 2.

Great news for fans of “Game of Thrones” and the Targaryen dynasty! HBO has renewed the fantasy drama series “House of the Dragon” for a second season!

“We are beyond proud of what the entire ‘House of the Dragon’ team has accomplished with season one,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming, in a statement. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.”

Before announcing “House of the Dragon” season 2: “We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

Introducing “House Of The Dragon”

Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Emma D'Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

“House of the Dragon” is a prequel to “Game of Thrones” based on George R. R. Martin's “Fire & Blood” book series, which was released in 2018.

The story takes place 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and focuses on the Targaryen family.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy and Milly Alcock) is the eldest child of King Viserys Targaryen I (Paddy Considine) and must fight for the throne after her father’s death. She faces many obstacles, including being a woman hoping to become Queen Regent of Westeros in a patriarchal society.

Rhaenyra will have to fight for her place on the Iron Throne, but she is strong and determined.

Non-Binary Actor Emma D’Arcy Plays Rhaenyra Targaryen

Non-binary actor Emma D'Arcy in Games of Thrones spinoff.

Emma D’Arcy, a non-binary actor, has been chosen to play the adult version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the new HBO Max series.

While it is now fairly common to see LGBTQ+ women in lead roles, it is much rarer to see a non-binary person playing a lead character. This is why the recent casting of D’Arcy in “House of the Dragon” is so significant. Not only is D’Arcy non-binary, but they are also the first non-binary actor to be cast as a lead in a major television series. This is a huge step forward for LGBTQ+ representation on television.

D’Arcy’s Thoughts On The Evolution Of Their Character

D’Arcy’s comments on their character development are quite interesting. Rhaenyra is definitely a complex character, and it sounds like D’Arcy has really thought about how she is portrayed on the show.

D’Arcy told Entertainment Weekly that Rhaenyra is “a person who feels at odds with the way that she is read by the world.” Understandably, she feels uncomfortable with the label “the Realm’s Delight, which implies a passivity, being an object of people’s ogling.”

After all, she is much more than just a pretty face. She is a strong woman who is constantly fighting for her place in the world.

“Rhaenyra has an ongoing battle with what it means to be a woman and is a fundamental outsider. She’s terrified of getting locked into motherhood and is aware of how her position would be different if she were male,” they stated for The Hollywood Reporter.

D’Arcy’s character struggles with societal gender expectations throughout the show. This is something that D’Arcy themselves can relate to, as they have experienced firsthand the pressure to conform to traditional gender roles.

In an interview, D’Arcy spoke about how their own experiences influenced their portrayal.

“I’m a nonbinary person,” they told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve always found myself both pulled and repelled by masculine and feminine identity, and I think that plays out truthfully here. She can’t attend court in a way that comes easily to other people.”

It is clear that D’Arcy has put a lot of thought and care into the development of their character. And this gives her an extra layer of depth.

Note that Milly Alcock played the younger version of Rhaenyra in the first episodes of “House of the Dragon.”
