Lesbian Series “Gentleman Jack” Was Renewed For A Second Season

gentleman jack renewed season 2

Gentleman Jack”, the new historic lesbian drama on BBC One and HBO, has been renewed for a second season!

We had the joy this year of discovering a brand new lesbian tv series created by Sally Wainwright and BBC ONE and also screened on HBO in the U.S.

“Gentleman Jack” follows a lesbian named Anne Lister (Suranne Jones). She is a visionary businesswoman who reached the limits of society faced by women in the 1800s. Not only is Anne Lister a fictional character, this woman actually existed and the show is based on the journals she wrote documenting her life

Back on the tv series' story. Anne Lister returns to the family home and takes over her father’s business. Quickly, we understand that she can be good at business, but that her weak point is women. She loves them, but she finds herself confronted with the society that forces women to marry a man. Anne wants to marry a woman.

And that’s where this story is amazing, again it’s a true story, it’s amazing because she will meet a woman named Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) and will undertake to seduce her. She wants to enjoy every day of her life alongside a beautiful woman with whom she likes to spend time. What she didn’t necessarily anticipate at first was that she would fall in love with Ann.

Season 1 ends with their wedding. This is a great moment in LGBTQ+ women’s history as Anne and Ann were the first couple of women to marry. A plaque commemorates their union at the Holy Trinity Church in York, a city in Northern England.

“Gentleman Jack” Is Renewed!

BBC One has announced the good news this summer. After the success of the first season, they decided to continue the story of Anne Lister and Ann Walker in a second season.

The entire team of the series welcomed this renewal announcement as Suranne Jones who plays the role of Anne Lister.

“I’m so thrilled that I will be joining Sally Wainwright on the second part of Anne’s journey,” she said. “We always dreamed there would be more and now we get to play it all out.”

But... (Unfortunately, there’s a 'but’) season 2 is likely to start in Fall 2020 or even 2021. It will be a long wait! Sooooo long... I set up a follow-up, I’ll let you know if there’s any important news about “Gentleman Jack.”

You know what? Let’s start today! I’ve got some news. Yes, I have. I wouldn't leave you waiting for season 2 that will begin in a year or more.

The Story Of Season 2

First, let’s talk about the story of this upcoming season. As you may guess it will focus on the relationship of the newly married couple.

“I’m utterly delighted that we’ve been recommissioned,” series creator Sally Wainwright said in a statement to the BBC, “because there are so many more big, bold stories to tell about Anne Lister and Ann Walker.”

She told Digital Spy even more: “They move into Shibden [Hall] together in series two and it’s about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well… Obviously, we’ve got season two, which is fantastic, and I hope it will continue on after that. There’s no end of stories.”

“Even though Anne Lister seems like this absolute powerhouse with this iron will, Ann Walker had a real streak of stubbornness–and of course she had all the money,” Wainwright explained in an interview with Radiotimes. So there was a real interesting dynamic and a real interesting power dynamic between them, which I’m really looking forward to exploring a bit more fully.”

Who wants to watch season two tomorrow? Raise your hand if you do. I’ve raised mine already. It’ll be a great season, right?

Season 2 Characters

After that, some concerns have emerged, especially regarding the characters of season 2. In other words, will all season 1 characters return for this new season? There’s nothing less certain.

It is not yet known whether Anne Lister’s sister Marian, who is played by Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones), will be back.

And there are doubts about Anne Lister’s aunt and father as well. Season two takes place after the wedding and her father and aunt have died, according to Lister’s journal. But the series is not intended to be a documentary, and there may be changes.

“I haven’t made too many choices yet, but I don’t really want to lose [Aunt Anne]” Wainwright told Radiotimes. “The dynamic around the dining table–I think that seems to work very well. There’s a nice family comedy in there with those different generations… I don’t lose characters unless I have to.”

“Just because they die in real life it doesn’t mean I have to bump them off in the drama,” she added.

I’m delighted to know that “Gentleman Jack” will be back for a second season and I’m excited to discover new episodes even though we must be very patient.
