Warrior Nun, The Series With Huge Queer Potential!

Netflix release Warrior Nun season 1.

Let me introduce you to a new series called “Warrior Nunthat features two lesbian characters and maybe more.

Honestly, when I started watching the show, I didn’t know what to expect, but I wasn’t disappointed, Warrior Nun has huge queer potential!

Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry describes the show as “the best feminist Catholic superhero show about sisterhood you’ve never seen”.

That’s true! I loved the originality of the story and, of course, the badass side of the warrior nuns.

It’s a series of quality. It’s very original and well done.

The Story of Warrior Nun

An orphaned 19 year-old young woman wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back and discovers she now possesses superpowers as the chosen Halo-Bearer for an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.

Warrior Nun Has Huge Queer Potential! (Spoiler alert!)

At first, I didn’t know there were queer characters, so imagine my surprise.

  • BEATRICE

Warrior Nun character Beatrice.

In episode 8, Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) evokes her lesbianism after telling the heartbreaking story of a former lesbian warrior nun who lived during World War II. She had increased the strength of the ring tenfold by appealing to her rage against the Nazis who imprisoned her.

  • MARY

Warrior Nun character Shotgun Mary.

Even though it is not explicitly stated in season 1, I also put Mary (Toya Turner) in the lesbian camp. That’s how I saw her.

Of course, there is the relationship she had with Shannon, but I find that it is not clearly identified as a love relationship.

However, while preparing this article, I discovered that the lesbian identity of Shotgun Mary had been confirmed in the comic book “Warrior Nun Areala”.

  • AVA

Beatrice and Ava in Warrior Nun season 1.

Let’s be honest, there’s room for a relationship future seasons between the main character, Ava (Alba Baptista), who could be bisexual, and Beatrice, right?

But Will There Be A Season 2?

If you’ve seen the ten episodes of season 1, I think you’re dying to know if there’s going to be a season 2, aren’t you?

You’re about to be disappointed by my answer: I don’t know. Netflix hasn’t announced the renewal yet. It shouldn’t be long now, let's be patient.

What I can tell you, though, is that originally the writers of the series had planned a real end to this first season and Netflix asked them to change it to offer the possibility of continuing the story in a second season. That’s why season 1 stops in the middle of the fight scene.

Netflix has probably bet on the success of the series, which I think is on the rendezvous. So I hope to tell you some good news soon.

What Will Happen In Season 2?

If there is a season 2, I gleaned some very interesting information on Beatrice.

In an interview with Fangirlish, Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry said that Beatrice’s sexuality will be explored more in season two, although, “I can’t say if it’ll resolve into a full-blown relationship with Ava,” he added.

This series needs to be developed, they can’t leave us with such information! lol

Season 1 of Warrior Nun can be watched right now on Netflix. Here’s the trailer:
