Michigan: A Third Gender Option For Driver’s Licenses And ID Cards

Michigan gender marker change on driver’s license and ID cards.

Recently, the State of Michigan has implemented a new third gender option for individuals seeking driver's licenses and state identification cards!

The new gender marker policy is here!

As of November 10, 2021, Michigan residents can choose between “M”, “F”, or the non-binary option “X” for their driver’s license and ID card.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson helped non-binary and transgender Michigan residents to change the gender marker on ID.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has reinstated in 2019 a measure that allows people to change their gender marker without providing documentation from a doctor or getting a court order.

“I am proud to support Michiganders across the state who for many years have called on the Department of State to provide a non-binary sex marker on their ID that matches their lived reality,” Benson said in a press release.

“We have been working toward this goal since 2019 when we first removed the barriers for residents to change their sex marker in order to help protect their safety and accurately reflect their identity.”

How to change your gender marker on your ID

Changing your gender marker to an “X” on your driver’s license or ID card is a simple process. All you need to do is to apply at any Secretary of State office.

You can also make an appointment by visiting Michigan.gov/SOS or by calling 888-SOS-MICH.

It’s time for all states to have the same rules

Jocelyn Benson’s office says that twenty-one other states, including Washington D.C., have a non-binary option for licenses and ID cards available as well!
