JAL, also known as Japan Airlines, has updated their greeting policy to be gender-neutral.
Through its spokesperson, the company said it wants to promote diversity.
“We have been promoting diversity in the community since 2014, and this is one of our actions taken to treat everyone (the same) regardless of gender,” Yutaro Iwasaki, publicist for JAL, told CNN Travel.
The “Ladies and Gentlemen” are therefore replaced by “attention all passengers” and “welcome, everyone”.
The airline is not at its first steps to change mentalities and address inclusivity. In March 2020, Japan Airlines offered its hostesses the possibility to wear pants instead of the traditional skirts.
With gender-neutral greetings, JAL becomes the first Asian airline to promote more diversity.
Its subsidiary, JAL Express, also hired the first female commercial air pilot in the country, Ari Fuji.
In the rest of the world, Air Canada and EasyJet also use inclusive language since 2019.
