The Story of Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt)

Australian queer movie Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) tells the story of two teenagers who fall in love. 17-year-old Ellie is struggling to find the courage to ask her classmate, Abbie, to the formal. Luckily her Aunt Tara, a lesbian who died in the 80s, has shown up as a “Fairy Godmother” to dish out advice, whether Ellie wants it.

The Cast

Ellie is played by actress Sophie Hawkshaw from the TV series “Love Child”. Abbie is portrayed by nonbinary actor Zoe Terakes (they will be forever known as Reb in my head, a trans character they played in the Australian lesbian/queer TV series "Wentworth").

What We Like

You might see Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) just as a queer rom-com, but there’s more than that. It’s about how we grow up. It’s about acceptance and how we learn to love ourselves.

Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) is a story about how you can be different. You can be a queer person, and that’s okay. You don’t have to hide who you are. Sometimes people will not understand, but it’s important to stay true to yourself and to keep on living your best life.

Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) is also a coming-of-age story that celebrates queer love in many ways. It can be romantic, it can be from family, or it could come from an intergenerational ghost.

Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) is a movie that will make you feel good.

I loved this movie for its genial tone and its LGBTQ representation.

What We DON’T Like

The problem with this movie is that the story was well written and acted out. The plot is engaging; the characters are compelling, and it’s a good movie for all ages, but the cursing is explosive.

The swear words are too explicit. As a result, the film is only accessible to 15+-year-old teens in most countries, sometimes 16+, making it off-limits to younger teens who might be its most receptive audience.
