If you’re looking for a show with a great representation of women and LGBTQ+ characters, Netflix’s new series “The Sandman” is a great choice.

The show tells the story of Morpheus, the titular Sandman, who rebuilds his kingdom after being held captive for a century.

Throughout the series, we see a wide variety of characters, including strong women and LGBTQ+ protagonists. This makes “The Sandman” a great pick for anyone looking for great representation on screen.

Not only does the series do a great job of representing female and LGBTQ+ characters, but it also has an engaging plot and great production values.

“The Sandman”: A Timeless Story

Originally, “The Sandman” was a graphic novel series created by Neil Gaiman, with the help of Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, that DC comics published between 1989 and 1996.

Neil Gaiman is one of the most celebrated authors of our time, with a career that spans more than three decades. His work often defies genre, but he is perhaps best known for his contributions to science fiction. It’s no wonder, then, that his work has been adapted for film and television.

For example, two of his most famous works, American Gods and Good Omens, have already been adapted into highly successful TV series.

And “Lucifer,” starring Tom Ellis in the title role, was also an adaptation from the universe of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman.”

For decades, Hollywood has been trying to bring the story of “The Sandman” to the big screen, but until now, these efforts have been stymied by the challenge of adapting such an enigmatic and cerebral work. It must be said that the author and the various artists who worked on “The Sandman” have created a unique and imaginative world.

Finally, it is in the form of a series that the project was born.

Netflix Series “The Sandman”

Morpheus aka Dream.

The series follows the story of the Endless, a family of powerful beings who personify aspects of the human experience, such as desire and death.

The series particularly focuses on one of the Endless, Dream, also known as “The Sandman” or Morpheus, who rules the Kingdom of Dreams.

One day, a human sorcerer uses a spell and takes him captive. Dream is imprisoned in a glass bubble from which he cannot escape unless someone falls asleep in his presence. Nearly a century later, that finally happens. And now that he’s freed himself from his glass prison, Morpheus sets out to find his stolen tools to restore his power and revive his kingdom that has fallen into decay during his absence.

On his journey, he will cross paths with the Fates, Abel and Cain, travel to hell, fraternize with his siblings, Death and Desire, confront unscrupulous humans, and much more. The road will be long and difficult, and it is uncertain that he will reach the end. However, Dream is resilient and determined. He has faced challenges before and come out victorious. So even though the odds may be stacked against him, there’s still hope that he’ll be able to overcome this latest obstacle and reclaim what’s rightfully his.

“The Sandman” Is A Successful Series

Netflix’s “The Sandman” is off to a very impressive start. The adaptation of the comic book created by Neil Gaiman is an enjoyable show that moves away from traditional superheroes. It explores themes of poetry, philosophy, and mortality through the lens of myth and fantasy.

A Triumphant Start

In addition to Netflix, Warners Bros and DC Entertainment have brought their A-game to the production, and it really shows. The series is visually stunning, with a unique blend of animation that brings the dream world and a whole host of mystical creatures to life. The sets are elaborate, the costumes are high quality, and the special effects are top-notch.

Of course, the series is still in its infancy, and it remains to be seen if it can maintain its high level of quality over the long term. But for now, it is off to a very impressive start. The first season of “The Sandman” is a real success.

Fantasy Fans Rejoice

I recently watched “The Sandman.” I personally thought it was an excellent series with a well-crafted story and an excellent cast. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy or philosophical fiction. The series addresses many questions about existence and the meaning of life. It does so in a rather light and entertaining way, which makes it more enjoyable. And the cast is first-rate.

“The Sandman” Cast: A Great Female And LGBTQ+ Representation

It’s always great to see diversity in a cast, and it’s even better when that diversity is done well. The writers on “The Sandman” have done a good job of creating interesting and complex female characters, including a good number of LGBTQ+ characters. And that’s definitely something to be celebrated.

Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine.

Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) was particularly well written. Jenna Coleman, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and, of course, Vanesu Samunyai, were also excellent as Johanna Constantine, Death, and Rose Walker.

Tom Sturridge and Vanesu Samunyai.

And being a big fan of Tom Sturridge (Irma Vep, Waiting For Forever, The Boat That Rocked, On The Road), I loved to see him in the lead role. David Thewlis (Wonder Woman) also does a great job as John Dee, as does non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park (The Legend of Vox Machina) as Desire.

Lose Yourself In A New World

All 10 episodes of “The Sandman” are now available on Netflix, so if you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time to catch up. The eleventh bonus episode, “Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope,” is also available on Netflix since August 19.

Success Of “The Sandman” Doesn’t Mean Renewal Is Guaranteed

After watching season 1 of “The Sandman,” the next question is: will there be a second season?

While season 2 of “The Sandman” is already written, and thus ready for production, and despite the apparent success of the series, Netflix has not yet officially announced whether they will renew the series for a second season.

A few days ago, Neil Gaiman, the creator of the original comic book who is involved in the production and writing of the series, answered a question from a fan who didn’t understand why the renewal had not yet been announced.

The Fan: “With all the talk of it being a top-streamed show all over for the past 2+ weeks, I don’t understand why S2 is even a question.”

Gaiman: “Because Sandman is a really expensive show. And for Netflix to release the money to let us make another season, we have to perform incredibly well. So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last two weeks. That still may not be enough.”

“The Sandman” is a great series that has been successful so far. Although there is no official word on a second season, the creators are hopeful. In the meantime, have you watched the show? What did you think about it?
